about

After Katrina but before the Indonesian and Japanese tsunamis and also before Irene and Sandy, I had a disturbing conversation with my wife about how all the ice in the entire world is melting at an alarming rate and that, as a result, living in a coastal zone is a recipe for disaster, among other cheerful ancillary subjects. Her response inspired “Lighten Up.” The song also takes advantage of my Mexican heritage – a slogan from the Dia de los Muertos festival: “We All Die, So Dance Now.” Which was basically my wife’s response.

lyrics

Lighten Up c. 2013 Sidney S. Whelan

"Lighten up!"
She said to me.
"You take it all
Too seriously."

"Altough you're right."
She said to me.
"It's all coming to an end,
Just not immediately."

"We got some time left."
She said to me.
"We can mourn when we're dead
Tonight is still lovely."

"Let's go dance."
She said to me.
"Where the sun sets
Over the wine-dark sea."

"We all die."
She said to me.
":So dance now
And hold me closely."

"Tell the truth;"
She said to me.
"It was worth livin'
To be with me."

"Lighten up!"
She said to me.
"You take it all
Too seriously."
